Our ICUs in CRISIS!

ICUs in the epicenter of the Delta outbreak are at breaking point. Workers from the frontline are reporting there just aren’t enough nurses to care for the alarming increase in the number of Covid+ patients needing ICU beds in Westmead and other hospitals in western and south-western Sydney.

Our healthcare workers are exhausted as they work around the clock to keep us and our families safe, but things look set to get worse before they get better. Our hospitals are at risk of being completely overwhelmed within weeks. We need the Government to take urgent action to ensure our ICUs have the staff and equipment they need to keep us, and themselves, safe during this pandemic.

There are 8 things the NSW Government must do right now:

  1. Redeploy ICU nurses from areas with no, or low Covid cases, to hospitals in crisis right now

  2. Provide incentives for retired nurses and other health professionals to assist and give early sign-off to student nurses like Victoria did last year

  3. Provide risk payment for nurses working on Covid wards

  4. Provide pandemic leave for healthcare workers who are forced to isolate due to Covid.

  5. Appeal to nurses from states with no Covid to assist

  6. Provide accommodation to healthcare workers who want to isolate from their families

  7. Draw upon any additionally ICU-trained nurses from previous surge planning

  8. Provide standardised airborne grade PPE to protect health workers from infection and any potential impact on staffing levels
